Factual TV programme issues

Factual TV programme issues

Accuracy is very important when it comes to being accurate, usually the most accurate place on television is the News because this tells people what is going on in the world which keeps them informed and the news is really their only reliable source. This means that they must be precise and trustworthy so that the public do not need to question it.
One of Ofcom rules are that if mistakes are made they are and should be acknowledged and corrected on air quickly and be appropriately scheduled.

Balance is when you see something from different point of views this gives you more of an understanding on what is going and what other peoples opinions and beliefs are, which gives the audience the chance to make their own mind up and have their opinions and beliefs. Television shows like The big questions shows the audience two different point of views which lets the audience make up their minds freely since everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Having a balanced argument/discussion it allows the audience see the different side of opinions to make their own minds up about the situation or topic.

Impartiality is when a media institution remains neutral and avoids giving personal opinions and beliefs. For example television presenters use this when they listen to both sides of an argument or topic etc but have no opinions of their own because it would be like taking sides and saying that one person is right and the other is wrong when really there might not be a right or wrong answer or response.
Ofcom says that impartiality on matters of political or industrial controversy and matters relating to current public policy must be preserved on the part of any person providing a service. This is effective for the audience because impartiality doesn't allow celebrity's opinions cloud their judgement.

Objectivity is when your opinions or your beliefs do not influence your storytelling or your decisions. This could be important for the audience because you see things from the outside looking in so you look at it from your own point of view of what happened or whats going on. It's like being a witness telling someone what they saw or what they know. This only allows them to assume what's going because they don't know full facts from the people that were involved.

Subjectivity is when your opinions or beliefs does influence your storytelling or your decisions which makes you involved. This could be important for the audience because you see it from the people who were involved point of views, and this could answer some questions that you had but never had an answer too. This allows them to become informed on what's going on around them with clearer understanding.

Opinion is when you give your own point of view on something and you don't follow other people's opinions, this lets you speak your mind and also being opinionated gives people the confidence to express how they feel about a certain topic. For example someone that expresses their opinions on television through their documentaries is Stacey Dooley.

Bias is when someone ignores one side of an argument and agrees with the other side. Taking a side might not always be the best thing because it shows that you might favour someone over the other but you don't actually agree with what they are saying. Also it might shows that you aren't bothered about someone else's opinion and only care about your friends opinion because they're your friend after all.

Representation is how a person is represented by the way that they may speak, act, or dress or even their skin colour etc. This could also cause people to stereotypical because just the way a person dresses, speaks, skin colour etc doesn't define them as a person when really they could have an incredible personality and be very intelligent but many people might not see that and just see the way a person looks.

Access is when journalist report specific topics accurately and they must give access to to certain people or places. People who will require permission are going to be under 16 years and they would need permission by a parent or legal guardian. For example on the documentary show 16 and pregnant they are able to decide if they want their lives broadcasted on television.

Privacy in society we have a right to our own privacy therefore it is extremely important to think about a persons privacy, since they are just normal people just trying to get on with their lives. Documentary makers may get in to a lot of trouble if they take things to far in following someone around with a camera and they might get annoyed with them being hassled all the time they might not want to do the documentary anymore.

Contract with the viewer is an unwritten rule between a producer and audience whereby all content is deemed accurate honest and engaging. Documentary makers should describe what their documentary is about about and then give the viewers the information that they said that they would by being accurate and precise.

Vice.com documentary - Accuracy

On Vice.com it contains many documentaries a particular documentary I found is about drugs and I found one that is about cannabis.

The documentary is called Kings of Cannabis which is about Arjan Roskam and he takes his group of strain hunters to Columbia as they look for the countries rarest types of cannabis which is very educational. Therefore this documentary would should have a great deal of accuracy since people that will watch this documentary will believe everything that is being said because it has an educational purpose to its audience. The people that might watch a documentary like this is people who study it, or are just interested to know what it's about.

In the documentary they also tell us about the type of cannabis that they found which can engage audiences because it may intrigue them depending on what type of people are watching the documentary.

In the documentary they also speak about why that type of cannabis is in that country and in this documentary its in Columbia so they would speak about why that cannabis is Columbia and the effects of that type of cannabis

Vice.com documentary - subjectivity

Another documentary that I found was Confession of a Bartender which shows a bartender talking about the stereotypes and secrets of the trade while wearing a creepy mask.In this documentary a bartender tells the audience what types of people come into the bar and the way that they act when they drink a lot of alcohol also the unknown bartender tells the audience what popular drinks that people buy.

He also tells his own personal stories that have happened when he was working for example he was punched in the face for breaking up a fight.

This gives the audience insight on what people in that type of job go through when they're working, which just helps the audience understand.

Hearing stories of a bartender, gives the audience an understanding of what a bartenders life is like it also creates a lot of realism since he gives real events that have happened which make the audience become more engaged to the documentary.
