When interviewing in a computer room there are a lot of wires that people could trip over and they would need to be tucked away.

Again, the room is small which means any space they can make will be needed to be done to ensure the environment is a safe one. When not in use chairs must be tucked away appropriately

Although the TV monitors are attached onto the wall, and have been for a long time there is a possibility of the screens being re adjusted not according to how they should and would be.

People’s behaviour can also be a hazard sine we are in school with students running around..

Phones can be very distracting in the time we are in. I could get distracted and the people that I am interviewing could get distracted. Leaving phones at home would help stop distraction.

Sub Genre Of Factual TV

Sub Genres of Factual TV

Docudrama is when a television programming or feature film etc. Is dramatised re-enactments of real events. Some docudrama's  are not always accurate and some times exaggerated to build up tension.
An example of a docudrama is Legend starring Tom Hardy. This film is based on real life people twins called Ronnie and Reggie Kray.

These twins were known as notorious gangsters in the 1960's in the East End of London. In this film Legend a character from the story called Frances Shea (Emily Browning) who was married to Reggie Kray narrates the story of the Kray twins. With a character from the story narrating, it may be engaging because you feel like you trust what they have to say. Also in this in the film some conventions that were used in this film was a lot of natural lighting since its realistic and the film was based on a real story. Also in this film they used a lot of weapons such as guns etc. Which then shows the audience that it is a thriller. Also when watching the film the weather looked quite dull which is exactly what the weather is like in London.

Docusoap is when documentaries follow people in specific occupations or even locations for a certain amount time. Docusoap follow real life for example love, education etc are all things people go through in their lives. An example of a Docusoap is Teen Mom which is about teenagers having a baby and are followed around by a team of camera men/women and see what and how they deal with being a parent at such a young age.

In Teen mom it is shot in the style of a documentary because they use handheld camera's which shows that it is realistic. Also they use a lot of actuality footage since it is happening there and then in present day this can be from people just walking in the same area that they are filming and also the Teen moms themselves.

Reality is when television programs show people being filmed to create entertainment for audiences. Reality TV is not scripted and is only ever filmed once. This is because they usually do a lot of live television which proves that is only ever filmed once. An example of Reality TV is Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor they do live shows and it's all real television.

In Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor the length of camera shots are usually used to make the audience who are sitting at home feel like they are actually there when watching it on TV. In Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor the angles that are used in the show are depending on what they are trying to achieve for example they might use a birds eye view to show the stage and see what's on the stage with performer to get a better look since your not actually there so it would make it more difficult for someone sitting at home and the birds eye view helps this. Or in the clip they usually keep it very minimal and realistic so they usually just keep the angle at eye level since its reality they and they might not want it to look unreal.

Infotainment is when shows are broadcasted to entertain and are also aired to inform. People are thinking that mainstream news is becoming more and more celebrity oriented. An example of Infotainment is E! News which is news that talks about celebrities and what is happening in their lives it's completed devoted to celebrities.

On the E! News they use voice overs when they are showing footage of something or someone they are talking about in this case celebrities. Also they may use direct dialogue when the E! News reporter speaks about about a celebrity which makes it engaging for the audience watching because the news is for them after all. They also use actuality footage since it's news about celebrities and what is happening in their lives right now which is what people are actually interested in. Also because there is a lot of things that need to be said in only a small amount of time that they have so they pick out the popular celebrities and talk about them and what is happening for them and then the others in sub titles going across the screen.

Educational is when you can learn something through a documentary. An example of an educational documentary is Jaime Oliver's cooking show. This teaches the audience how to cook. This is educational for people trying new recipes or just people who want to learn how to cook.

On Jaime Oliver's cooking show they use narration a lot so they tell the audience what they are doing which can be like they are talking what you have to do which is very helpful. Also the clothes that Jaime Oliver wears is what a chef would wear so when you were to watch this show you can already tell that you are going to watch which is a cooking show. Also the props around him for example food and utensils etc show exactly what the show is about.

Wildlife is when documentaries film animals, plants or even non human living creatures. Usually are filmed in their own natural habitat. 100% of wildlife documentary are footage of nature. An example of a wildlife documentary is The Crocodile Hunter which starred Steve Irwin.

In The Crocodile Hunter they also very rarely involve interviews. Also there is unobtrusive camera work since the documentary makers don't want scare the animals since it's about how things act in their natural habitat. Also in wildlife documentaries they usually do voice overs which is quite often if it's a very quiet habitat and that it shouldn't be disturbed but in some they can talk and they narrate everything that they are doing and exactly what they see. They usually also give you information on what its you are looking at so therefore it can be quite educational. Also they use natural lighting to keep it very realistic since wildlife is real.

Special Interest is when a documentary is made and its only about one specific thing or person to interest a certain target audience. It target a small audience rather than a wider range of audiences. An example of a special interest documentary is Ronaldo. This documentary follows one of the most popular footballers of all time Christiano Ronaldo.

In Ronaldo they use actuality footage since they follow Christiano Ronaldo life and what his sort of day to day life is like. They also use archive footage to show how his football career had started off. They may have made a documentary about Christiano Ronaldo's life because it's engaging for football fans and also it could be inspiring to young people that want to be like him since he is a very successful footballer.

Makeover documentaries shows its target transforming people or their lives. This could be anything from physical appearance or their houses. This is a very real documentary and the people that are chosen for these things are real genuine people and want to change. An example of this is Snog, Marry, Avoid. When they take random people and ask if they want to change their appearance. First of all they pick the person then they take a photo and ask members of the public would you Snog? Marry? or Avoid? this person and usually their response would be Avoid and then the creators would then get experts to change their appearance and then they would go out to the public and ask would you Snog? Marry? or Avoid? this person and usually by this time people would say they would Snog or Marry this person.

In Snog Marry Avoid they use actuality footage and they since they go out to the public and speak to them on how someone looks at that precise moment. Also in the show the era that it is set in is modern day since when they change up someone's outfit it's to something that people would wear now for example if it was a teenage girl they might put her in a crop top since those are fashionable for teenagers.

Discussion is when a group of people have a discussion on specific topics. This could be about anything from the news, celebrities etc. An example of a discussion show is Big Brother's Bit on the side. Which is a live show that is on after the actually programme discussing what is going on in the house they do this in front of live audience and they also get involved with the discussions with guest celebrities sitting on the panel.

In Big Brothers Bit on the side interview experts to talk about things like the house mates body language and the way they are acting in a certain situation. They also have music at the begging of the show and sometimes the end of the show to make the show more engaging and fun for the audience there.

Review Shows is usually based around experts in certain fields debating around products or services allowing the audience a clear insight into the debate. An example of a review show is The Gadget Show. This is a British television series. This is usually broadcasted on channel 5. The show previews and reviews the latest gadgets. This is to engage and inform the audience on the world of gadgets.

On The Gadget Show they use voice overs when they are showing something that is related to what they are talking about. They also use actuality footage when they film outside the studio when they have people in the background going about their own business. Also the props that they show are gadgets that they are trying therefore you know what kind of show it's going to be about.

Chat Shows is a television show or can be a radio show that people talk informally about various topics. These guest can be celebrities or just normal people. An example of a chat show is The Jeremy Kyle Show. Which has people come one the show and talk about an issue that they are dealing with for example a family feud, DNA tests etc.

On the Jeremy Kyle Show they use artificial lighting since it is filmed in a studio in front of a live studio audience. The presenter of the show Jeremy Kyle is also seen as very biased about a lot of topics. He usually takes someone's side or sometimes he doesn't take anyone's side. He also brings out experts to talk with these people for example Graham Stanier is a therapist on the show and usually after the show talks with the people who have an issue and gives them support. Also on some topics they may need lie detector test and they have a lie detector expert that is qualified in the field so that the wrong test result isn't given out.

Magazine shows are usually broadcasted during the day time on terrestrial TV. It appeals to a wide range of audiences. An example of a magazine show is Good Morning Britain which talks about different things going on in the world, also they speak with celebrities and what is going on in their lives or even TV series'. Magazine shows are usually live.

On Good Morning Britain they have interviews with different celebrities or experts. They also use voice overs when talking about a specific topic and they could show what happened or what was going on. Sometimes they might use archive footage when relating to different topics and sometimes they use actuality footage as well if they were talking from other locations. Since magazine shows are usually live they are filmed in studio's and they would use artificial lighting.

Documentary Pitch

Documentary Pitch

When presenting my pitch to my small group. I told them what I would be doing my documentary about and how I would go about doing this. My group thought that I came up with good ideas which I think is beneficial. They also told me how I could make it more engaging for example, looking at the disadvantages of social media and having an interview with someone who has had issues with social media before for example cyber bullying.

Also I could talk with pastoral and see what their views and experiences have been with bullying in schools I could also show a graph that shows many teenagers in the UK are or have been cyber bullied and I guess just see what the results come out as after for example if they go down or up and come up with an overall conclusion about the subject.

What I really want to do for my documentary is to look at how teenagers are affected by it so I think using young people it makes it more engaging for them instead of older people where they might find it boring and un-engaging.

Narrative Arc

Narrative Arc

My documentary will be to see the benefits and disadvantages of social media are. This is going to be aimed at teenagers and how social media affects their lives.

I'm trying to show the different benefits and disadvantages to people. For example if people only see things wrong with social media i could inform them of the benefits of social media which could change their opinion but they are able to make up their own minds overall.

I will achieve this by having interviews with my target audience and get their opinions to make it fair since it is for the audience after all. Also by including the audience it might make it more engaging.

There will be a concluding statement to my documentary however i must conduct the interviews first because it will determine on the information and feedback that i receive back therefore it will be an overall conclusion.

Production Log 3

This week I spoke with a group of people from my class and we had a discussion and we presented our pitches to one another and when presenting it to them they gave me back feedback of what they think will work and what wouldn't and what they also thought didn't really make sense therefore i cleared it up for them. I think that this was very effective for me because it's like getting other people's opinions on what they would like to see and if i include them then the target audience would most likely like to watch my documentary.
Also this week i have just been finishing off and improving my blogger work since i don't want to start the filming and then have to go back to do some blogger work.

Legal and ethical issues

Legal and ethical issues

In my documentary I put a disclaimer at the beginning since some of the footage that I used was not my own.

Production Log 2

I have been sending emails and messages to some potential interviewees some experts and also some youtuber's i have also asked a friend of mine who has her own website and she says that she will speak about it in an interview with me. Also i have spoken to some professional teachers in the school for example ict teachers Mr Tranchino and Mr Betiku to be interviewed and they have agreed that they would sit down and have an interview with me.

Also i have been thinking that i might get someone from pastoral to interview and ask if they have ever had a student come into their office and speak about a bully from social media and what their opinion on social media is.

I think using people from school would be more of an effective way of making this documentary since it is based around students and it might just be really boring for them if they are watching people that they can not relate too. For students can relate with teachers since they are with them every single day.

Production Log 1

Production Log 1

I have come up with many different types of ideas that i would like my documentary to be about at first i wanted to do my documentary about The 100 tv show since i am a huge fan and also i would many different opinions which makes me very passionate therefore i thought that would be the best thing to do it about however since the show is mainly based in the US not a lot of people in the UK would really know what the show is or what it's about. Also interviewing people over things like Skype may also be difficult because they don't want to be put on camera, since i wouldn't know them personally.

Therefore i have decided to change my idea to a documentary about social media since it is worldwide and also i could interview people i personally for example interviewing, kids, teenagers, and adults and how social impacts their lives in the different generations and how they use social media. Also social media is also something i know a lot about myself since i am a teenager after all.

Unit 27 - Nichols modes of documentary

Nichols modes of documentary

Documentaries there are three different types of conventions shown:

Realism is real footage that is usually shot with handheld cameras and they usually give interviews to the people that were involved in the situation or topic etc. This makes the audience feel like they are there with them and gives them and understanding of real life events happening around them.

Dramatisation
are re-enactments on a situation and documentary makers make dramas out of this, this may include things like cliffhangers, graphics, music etc.

Narrativisation
is making a story which is created by complete facts. Its an effective way of telling a story and this is always seen or heard in documentaries.

Expository are real life documentaries that have not been changed to make better for example the documentary Animal Planet you get to see different things that you usually wouldn't get to see in our day to day lives, also seeing things that wild animals do may make things feel so surreal because you wouldn't have seen it happen before. Also the presenter of the documentary may verbally commentate on what that animal is doing for example eating, hunting etc. However people might not be interested in animals and what they do and they would find this boring and they wouldn't have any interest in it what so ever.

Observational also known as a fly on the wall documentary is a documentary when the camera takes the role of the audience. For example in Keeping Up With The Kardashian's the audience can see what the Kardashian family does during their day to day lives which gives the audience some escapism in seeing what people that are completely different to them live like on a daily basis for example the Kardashian family are extremely wealthy and famous which is different to someone who isn't wealthy and isn't famous so they may get some joy out of watching someone else's luxurious life. However watching this could get boring after a while because it gets quite repetitive.

Interactive is an interaction between the person being documented and the documentary maker the most common way of interacting which is done by an on camera interview. For example Stacy Dooley is a documentary maker that actually interviews someone and interacts with the people that they are documenting so therefore she is seen in the documentary which is what makes it more interesting. Nichols explains "What happens in front of the camera becomes an index of the nature of interaction between filmmaker and subject".

Reflexive is when the filmmaker acknowledges their presence which gives the documentary a narrative. Louis Theroux makes many reflexive documentaries. In  his documentaries he likes to get involved in the activities but still be detached from the people being documented.  Reflexive are usually always truthful so they keep the realism in the documentary they also address the audience quiet often to get their opinions which engages by making them feel involved the audience to keep them watching.

Performative is when the storyteller or filmmaker is the narrative of the story so they would need some personal experience which would give them a better understanding that way it is more effective to the audience. For example the film catfish is about a personal experience and he is the main character in the film and he shows the story. The audience may be engaged in this because it's actually something that happens in real life so they might find it useful and it keeps people aware that not everyone you meet online is who they say they are. This show acts as an awareness show since it informs people that not everyone online is who they say are.

Codes and conventions of a news broadcast

The Analysis of a Real News Package

Report structure

Report structure - is a report which follows a structure in which elements appear in.

Lead summary - which is when the news reporter introduces what they're going to talk about in that episode.

Links to exterior locations - when news reporters link to a correspondent that is in a different location which is usually always live on television.

Quotes/interviews - when the correspondent is out at a different location there might be someone there that saw what happened or knows something about the topic etc, and they can interview them there live.

Actuality footage - is when in the background there is something happening for example if there are people walking thats real footage that is happening there and then.

Link to studio - when the correspondent is finished interviewing etc it then goes to the studio where they will finish of the topic in hand.

Summary - is when you sum up all the information you've got which just clarify's whats been said already this is also the very last thing that a news reporter has to do before moving on to another topic.

I believe that a news reporter should wear formal clothing which makes them look professional and are taken seriously. However for a correspondent if in a location were people dress differently the correspondents should respect that and dress that way. For example if in a warehouse or building site they should have hard hats on and wear Hi Viz jackets like other people on that site would dress.

Modes of address

News reporters and correspondents must speak confidently because if they stutter and make mistakes people wont continue watching, also it may show that they don't even know what they're talking about so how is the audience supposed to know. This makes them look unprofessional. Therefore they should have the correct Accent which helps there audience understand them and are not left thinking 'what did they just say'' because this will lose viewers if the audience don't understand.

The tone of someone's voice is very important especially on television if someone has a dull tone of voice it may show the audience that they are not bothered, and don't really care, also it's unprofessional, this may lead to them getting into trouble with their boss or fired. This means having the right tone of voice is very important to an audience because it shows that they confident in what they are saying which helps the audience be engaged and listen to what they have to say because of the way that they present it makes people want to listen.

Links to the studio

Links to the studio - are interactions between the field reporter and news reader.

An example of links to the studio is the BBC news they use this a lot on television also it's not boring watching someone in a studio just reading what they have to say to the audience that would lose viewers whereas having a field reporter it engages people and also they may have an expert on site at that location that they can interview which gives audience more of an understanding of the topic.

Correspondents may interact with a reporter back at the studio for things like facts and statistics which they may interact upon, footage that they may speak about together and disscuss some certain points that were shown in the footage. Also the news reporter in the studio may also have questions for the field reporter when live on air which just gives audience understanding and it just as if the studio reporter is taking on on the role of the audience by asking questions that they may have .

Field reporters

Field reporters - a field reporter (correspondent) is the main focal point of a news package

Having a field reporter is much easier and less time consuming because they are on hand at different locations this is also much more effective to the audience because it would feel realistic to to them because the topic that they are on may have something to do with that location and also the things that are happening in the background might make you feel like you are there which creates realism.

When doing a field report things that happen in the background gives the audience clearer understanding on what's going on. Also things may happen live on air which shows the audience that they are doing a real live report there and then and usually in the bottom corner or top corner they must tell you if a programme is live. This just creates a lot of realism and it's believable for the audience this makes the audience believe what the reporter has to say.

Interviewing experts & eye witnesses

Interviewing experts & eye witnesses

Experts and eye witnesses who don't have a personal connection with that person or thing etc, may give information will being interviewed on what they witnessed they have to be accurate since people would get false information when the news should an accurate place on television. They can also be subjective if they were involved in the situation so they can give their own point of view and their opinion on the situation.

Also when interviewing experts and witnesses live it will show actuality footage when people are walking or doing something in the background or something that is relevant to what the situation is about happens in the background which just shows the audience that its real life, and it just makes it seem more realistic.

News package evaluation

Evaluation

Lead summary
In the lead summary for the parody we used Yazmin as an unprofessional news reporter since she wears tracksuits which a normal news reporter wouldn't wear. Also when she was doing the report she was talking to the people behind the camera when really she should be talking to the audience and not the camera person. She also forgot the correspondents name which made her look unprofessional and not actually caring about what else was going on around her.

Interviewing eye witnesses
When interviewing the eye witness Daniel who played the care taker of the school who actually doesn't even have anything to do with the situation was not really a smart thing to do. Christiana asked him questions and this response each time was "I don't know" which made it not very productive by interviewing when he had nothing to say or have any input in what was going on.

Link back to the studio
When Christiana linked backed to the studio there was nobody there sitting at the desk which means that she had other things to do when doing she needed to be doing her news report. Also when she did return to her desk she had no idea what was up next which doesn't help the audience watching the news which would make audiences want to change what they are watching since they are not being serious about what their job is.

Links to exterior locations
When Yazmin linked to an exterior location where Christiana was she was on the phone which also made her look unprofessional and the camera person had to tell her that she was live which shows that she also wasn't paying any attention to what she had to this makes her look not very serious about her job.

Modes of address
Yazmin the news reporter was wearing a tracksuit which makes her look unprofessional also when we went to the field reporter Christiana she was wearing a leather jacket which doesn't make her look professional either. Also when Yazmin was reporting she was using slang and the way she was talking didn't flow like a good news reporter voice should. Also she seemed like she had no idea what was going on.
